Amna Walayat
I became interested in Colonisation and Imperialism after my Postgraduation thesis Project with University College Cork, 2015. Inspired by Edward Said “Orientalism”, my work has political agenda. I am dealing with the subject of hegemony, exploitation, power, and control during British era, I focus on Indian sub-continent. My work is researched based. From the study of history, images of miniature paintings and contemporary artwork, I carefully choose symbols or fragments as signifiers and bring them together to create new meaning. The resulting images are free floating in time, while also reflecting contemporary socio-political context. My recent work explores the subjects of migration, “colonial sins”- killing of nawabs and heroes, propaganda, looting, laissez-faire policies, and occupation. I also deal with forced migration / Transatlantic Slave trade that was the part of British Colonial project and its expansion. I am currently living and working in Ireland
